Aug Feature: Stem Cell, Salmon DNA & Microneedling
3 unusual beauty treatments have been making they way into the hearts of women around the world for their powerful anti-aging properties! How do they work? Find out more about them with Dr Karen Soh, medical director of Privé Clinic.
Q: What is after-care like for each of the following treatment: Rejuran Healer, Nanopore Microneedling and Calecim Facetherapy?
A: Rejuran Healer – Rejuran is a skin-repairing injectable treatment. Mild bumps or swelling may occur at the injection site, but usually disappear within 48 hours. Use gentle, skin-friendly products without alcohol or fragrances and avoid wet or heat intensive activities such as outdoor or sea sports, hot yoga or sauna for at least 48 hours. Remember to apply sunblock every morning, re-apply if necessary.
Microneedling – After Nanopore Microneedling treatment, the skin may feel slightly raw and tender so try to use only gentle skincare products without alcohol or fragrances as much as possible and apply sunblock daily. Patients can also use healing skincare products like Calecim to speed up skin recovery!
Calecim Facetherapy – No specific aftercare needed! Calecim is a healing and pampering face treatment that soothes and hydrates skin. It also speeds up cell recovery and skin repairing, and rebuilds the skin’s natural moisture barrier so it is particularly helpful after any aesthetic procedures, or for sensitive and damaged skin. Patients are encouraged to continue good skincare habits such as cleansing and moisturising, and applying sunblock every morning.
Q: With Nanopore Microneedling, it is injuring the skin to stimulate healing and collagen production for tissue repair, could you elaborate more on how this works? And does that mean every time we injure ourselves (like getting a cut or scratch), we are also helping our skin stay youthful looking?
A: Nanopore Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that aims to treat scar tissue, lax skin, wrinkles, and large pores by increasing collagen production. Controlled micro-injuries are made in your skin using micro needles to trigger the release of growth factors and increase collagen production for tissue repair. This encourages the regeneration of a new layer of skin that is more even in texture, firmer and more toned. At the same time, concentrated stem cells are delivered to the deepest layers of the skin for powerful anti-inflammatory regeneration and to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier.
The same effect cannot be achieve when you injure yourself as the cut is already too huge when it is visible. The micro-injures done with Microneedling are made with ultra fine 0.25—2mm deep needles. These tiny cuts are made only to the epidermis (surface layer for general skin rejuvenation) or dermis layer (deeper layer for scars and uneven skin texture) of the skin, and cause no injury to the tissues beneath the skin surface. At the same time, the stem cells delivered through the treatment help the skin regenerate and heal itself quickly.
Q: What exactly is Calecim derived from? What makes this particular stem cell extract more effective than the stem cell extracts found in skincare products?
A: Calecim contains stem cells that is scientifically derived from umbilical cord lining tissues. It has been found that this is the richest source of epithelial and mesenchymal stem cells from a non-embryonic source. Stem cell growth factors are unique because they encourage cell repair and rejuvenation much more actively than cytokines secreted by cells that are not stem cells. Many skin care products currently in the market use growth factors that are derived from skin cells, not stem cells.
Q: How do the stem cells help promote skin renewal, could you elaborate more on how they work?
A: Cord Lining Stem Cells are able to treat symptoms of aging by sending “Youth Messages” that encourage glycoprotein production at multiple layers to restore healthy skin function. Stem cells can differentiate to build new cells and tissues, and orchestrate the action of other cells in the body, including the body’s natural healing and regeneration response. They communicate by producing and releasing proteins called cytokines and growth factors which bind to specific receptors on cell membranes, stimulating the cells to carry out a precise and intricate response (i.e skin healing and regeneration).
Q: All 3 treatments — Rejuran Healer, Nanopore Microneedling and Calecim Facetherapy, help with signs of ageing, so how will patients know which treatment will be most suitable to their anti-ageing needs? How do the 3 treatments differ when it comes to treating signs of ageing?
A: Individuals with mild acne problems, oily skin and enlarged pores would be an ideal candidate for Nanopore Microneedling, to deliver concentrated stem cells to the targeted layer of the skin for powerful anti-inflammatory regeneration and to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier.
For more serious, severe acne and acne scars, we would recommend a reparative approach to using Rejuran Healer, made up of polynucleotide (PN), derived from salmon DNA. It is known for its ability to self-regenerate the skin, improve the biological skin’s condition, to treat, heal and repair skin damage.
Calecim Facetherapy may be used in combination with Rejuran Healer or Nanopore Microneedling, as these two treatments cause micro-injuries to the skin and the stem cells in Calecim will speed up the recovery time. Calecim Facetherapy is also ideal for patients who undergone laser and energy-based treatments like Ultherapy and Thermage.
