The ABCs of Botox vs Dermal Fillers?

The line between Botox and Fillers are often blurred. Many people are confused because they are commonly used interchangeably. While you can opt to do either one depending on your area of concern, we do see patients who choose to combine both treatments together so that they can replace some full-on invasive cosmetic procedures.

Our patients who come in to Prive Clinic are generally looking to restore an ageing face, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles or loss of volume. But remember doing too much to your face can actually make it less appealing, the whole idea is to create a fresh natural look so that you do not end up looking fake or “plastic”.

Let us simplify it for you and give you the lowdown on these treatments.

WHAT IS BOTULINUM TOXIN?

Let’s start with Botox. Botox is actually one of the brands of botulinum toxins. There are other brands in the market such as Dysport, and more recently Xeomin, the new kid on the block. Botulinum toxin is a natural, purified protein that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles and prevents contraction. This reduces the appearance of existing wrinkles and prevents new ones from forming.

Botulinum Toxin treatments are more commonly used for crow’s feet, frown lines (Glabellar), brow lift, forehead wrinkles and tear troughs.

We also do see patients who come to us to treat medical conditions such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and large calf muscles.

HOW LONG DOES IT LASTS AND DOES IT HURT?

The effects last typically between 4 to 6 months and it’s generally a painless treatment. Your clinician may use ice probes or apply a local anaesthetic to numb the treated area.

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?
dermalfillers

Fillers are injectable gels that boost facial volume and shape, plumps and fills in fine lines and wrinkles, diminishes under-eye circles, increases fullness of lips and lifts up the skin. The main ingredient in the fillers are hyaluronic acid, which stimulates collagen growth and replenishes hydration lost in skin due to factors such as ageing and exposure to harmful UV rays. Some common brands of fillers area Boletero, Radiesse, Sculptra, Juverderm and Restylane which are examples of semi-permanent fillers. Depending on your area of concern, a skilful doctor with a variety of FDA-approved brands of choice, will be able to advise which brand will be best to use for the treated area.

HOW LONG DOES IT LASTS AND DOES IT HURT?

The effects typically last between 9 – 18 months. The fillers that we use are biodegradable and temporary. They eventually break down and leave the body through natural processing. Your clinician will apply a local anaesthetic to numb the areas in question for a good period of time. Once the effect of anaesthetic sinks in, the doctor carries out the filler injections. This makes the procedure practically painless.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS?

  • With such treatments, will I end up looking worse once I stop? Will I get addicted to it?Absolutely Not! The whole idea of these treatments is to disrupt or slow down the process of ageing as compared to not having anything done. For most of our patients who are pleased with the results, they would rather return for regular maintenance.
  • Why semi-permanent fillers are a better option that permanent fillers?a) Semi-permanent fillers can be placement adjusted as you age and as the skin, bones and muscle change, shift and rearrange. The adjustment of filler placement can then be addressed at each event to fit the changing landscape of the face; thus allowing a custom “fit” for the new and ever-changing landscape of the face.
    b) Semi-permanent fillers can be easily dissolved and are biodegradable as it breaks down and leaves the body through natural processing. So in the event, you have a change of mind, the semi-permanent fillers can be dissolved.
  • Why are some clinics charging lesser and others more?a) Doctor’s credentials – you can be assured the doctors at Prive Clinic are certified and have extensive hands-on training, are kept updated to the latest techniques and technology.
    b) Quality of the products – there are many imitation products that are readily available. At Prive Clinic, we use only those that are FDA-approved.
    c) Value for money – clinics charging less may sometimes mean that they are not giving you the full dosage and may dilute it, which means you may not get the best optimum results that you want
