Her World Doc Talk Sep: Skin Tightening
One of the best ways to tighten sagging skin is using radio frequency treatments. Dr Karen Soh, medical director of Privé Clinic, explains how it works, the pain factor, and how long the results last.
- What’s the best skin tightening treatment for someone in her 30s. I’m seeing the first signs of sagging and lines.
Thermage is a popular non-invasive anti-aging and skin tightening treatment that utilises radio frequency to smooth out wrinkles and lift the skin. The treatment involves sending radio frequency energy into the deeper layers of the skin; this energy turns into heat which causes your collagen chains to shorten and thicken, creating a tightening effect. At Privé we have the 4th generation Thermage FLX treatment for increase accuracy, comfort and speed.
Ultherapy is another popular option. It is a non-surgical, non-invasive FDA-approved ultrasound treatment that counteracts the effects of time and gravity on your skin, without any downtime. Ultherapy uses the body’s own regenerative response to gently and gradually lift and tighten the skin.
While it is not a substitute for plastic surgery, and not everyone is a good candidate for these treatment, patients between the ages of 30 and 60 who are looking for a non-invasive facelift will benefit from having Thermage and/or Ultherapy done. At Privé, every treatment is uniquely customised – we vary the shots and intensity levels based on what is best for our patients.
2. I’m sold on RF treatments being able to give me non-surgical skin lift, but I worry about the cost, pain factor, side effects and whether it will damage my skin in the long run.
Not all radiofrequency machines work the same way. As compared to RF treatments found in beauty salons, Thermage operates at a much higher intensity and can only be performed by a licensed medical practitioner. In addition, Thermage can target and remodel collagen in the deeper layers, thereby produce must more apparent and longer lasting results. The treatment tighten the underlying skin structure and contour the face to create firm, toned and youthful looking skin. In general, patients only require a single Thermage treatment and results may last a year or longer. The discomfort level for Thermage varies from patient to patient depending on individual pain tolerance. At Privé we always want patients to have a comfortable experience, and we are equipped with various pain management methods for patients. This treatment is only available in licensed clinics and is only done by doctors with prices typically ranging from $3000 onwards depending on the version.
For maintenance, one can also consider the Exilis Elite Treatment. This treatment uses a combination of radiofrequency energy, ultrasound and skin cooling to deliver controlled heating to target deep tissue, addressing deeper wrinkles, sagging skin and jowls, as well as the superficial skin layer, treating finer lines. Exilis Elite is a comfortable and pampering treatment – most patients describe the feeling like a warm face massage. This treatment is only available in licensed clinics and medi-spas with prices typically ranging from $300 onwards.
When performed correctly, RF treatments effectively lift and tighten tissues without surgery or downtime – being one of the greatest benefits of such treatments. Side effects are typically minimal and short-lived, with limited to mild and temporary swelling, redness, and tingling, depending on the treatment. Thermage and Exilis Elite are both manufactured by reputable companies, and have gone through numerous clinical trials to ensure their efficacy and safety for skin tightening in the long run.
- Is there an optimal combo of treatments I can do with RF, for maximum results on my skin?
At Privé, we always tailor unique combination treatments that best suit our patients’ needs. Some popular combinations include the use of fillers to plump sunken areas or accentuate certain features, and botulinium toxin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This helps give off an overall rested and lifted look and works very well to achieve natural looking results.
Other popular options include Pico Laser for pigmentation, Rejuran Healer for damaged skin and scars, or even Skin Boosters to boost hydration. RF treatments are very versatile and can be paired with a variety of treatment to target patients’ concerns. There is always a solution and everyone can benefit from having it done.
